Horror Movie Reviews

Halloween's about all things scary, and what's scarier than a good horror movie?

Horror is such a big movie genre, which make it almost impossible to choose only a few. There is cannibalism, possession, exorcism, ghosts, other supernatural entities and so much more. And that is why we are here to bring some of the movies that might be worth watching this Halloween.

The Green Inferno:
One horror movie that we watched is The Green Inferno. The film is centered around a university freshman named Justine and a group of environmental activists. They decide to travel to an unknown place in the Amazon to stop construction from harming an indigenous community living in the area. Upon arriving they chain themselves to trees and bulldozers in attempts to prevent further destruction of the land. After a “successful” effort they celebrate on the plane ride home only to crash into the Amazon, killing half of them in the process. Once the survivors were out of the plane, they quickly get captured by the community they were trying to save and discover that said community was madu up of were all hungry cannibals, and they were dinner. Our thoughts on the movie is that you must have a strong stomach to watch the gory/disturbing scenes, and must have patience to get through the extra details that maintain the storyline of the movie. But for those who would be willing to watch it, the cultural reality of these individuals will give you a sense of bewilderment which entices you to watch more. The people that the directors chose to cast the native people were an actual group of First Nations living in the Amazon (except not cannibals… hopefully). Though this movie is a little gory, (which is to be expected of a Rated R movie) we wouldn't consider it to be all that scary so if you can handle a few mature scenes it shouldn't be something to haunt you in your nightmares. If you are still not convinced; just know that in between these scenes there is a little comic relief by Lars played by the one the only Daryl Sabara from Spy Kids! This may be a serious movie but the writers definitely knew how to cut the tension by adding Lars to take away some of the seriousness within the plot. Overall we definitely recommend this movie (but only to those who can handle a few scenes containing lots of blood and gore), and would rate this movie 6/10.

Don’t Breathe:
Another must watch horror movie will have to be Don’t Breathe directed by Fede Alvarez. It is a tight, confined horror movie, one that makes you feel claustrophobic right alongside with the protagonist. Rocky, Alex and Money are three delinquents who break into people’s houses and sell the items they take to a accompany. However, the person buying the stolen goods give them a much lesser price than they had bargained for and this is not nearly enough to fund Rocky’s dream of moving to California with her little sister to get away from her neglectful mother and alcoholic boyfriend. They decide to break into a wealthy, blind man’s house for a hidden large sum of money. They break into the house one night, and search the house. Unable to find any traces of money, they assume it is behind a locked door. Money shoots the lock with his gun and this noise wakes the blind man up. A while after finding the money they discover a locked woman in the basement. It is full of heart wrenching surprises. In our opinion, all thriller lovers should definitely watch this movie. It has a new unanticipated twist every time the viewer relaxes after a gory scene. When the movie approaches it’s conclusion, it gets slightly boring. But after the shocking climax of the movie, your heart will be hammering your chest too fast to care. Overall, we recommend this movie and give it the rating of 8.5/10.

The Orphan:
One more horror movie you should definitely watch is The Orphan. The Orphan has all the characteristics any good horror movie needs, such as jump scares, psychologically traumatic scenes, creepy plot twists and of course; blood. The Orphan is about a couple with 2 children who adopt a girl but soon learn that their adoptive daughter Esther is nothing like the innocent girl they thought she was. Our opinions of movie is that overall it is a good and creepy movie, but at some points had plot holes. One thing we noticed is that the young girl is from Russia, but the actress who played her could not continuously keep a Russian accent. The actress only kept it up about half the time throughout the movie. This made the movie less believable and real. Another problem within the movie, is that Isabelle Fuhrman who plays Esther was only 12 at the time making a few of the scenes weirdly disturbing. Although this movie did had a few mistakes, there were more positive points than negative. The movie played with your mind and had a lot of unexpected outcomes. It  constantly kept you hooked, the mysterious creepiness made you want to stick it out ‘till the end. The end of the movie had a shocking plot twist, explaining the rest of the movie and Esther’s story. It was definitely worth watching and we would highly recommend it to you. Our rating of this movie is a 8/10.

Halloween is the perfect time for scary movies, and we hope this article has helped you choose a flick this Hallow’s Eve.We really recommend you to watch one or even all of these movies, and hope you enjoy them as much as we did.
