Getting Involved at the Ridge

If you were at Club Day a couple weeks ago, you’ve probably noticed that the lunch and after school hours here at Iroquois Ridge are jam packed with clubs, bands, and teams. From Interact to physics club to the mock trial team, there are a lot of wacky but wonderful activities going on. The sheer number of choices can be overwhelming, so keep on reading if you want to get involved but are unsure of where to start!

One of the most well-known clubs at school is Interact. They’re an organization that revolves around service, so if you’re looking for volunteer hours, this is a good club to join. Each year, they also organize a service trip to another country, which you can apply for (this year, the chosen country is Guatemala). They meet Tuesdays at lunch in room 119, and speaking from my friends’ experiences, anyone is welcome to join at any time.

Another good way to get volunteer hours is through Global Issues Club. As the name suggests, the club is dedicated to helping to solve global issues, and it’s possible to gain volunteer hours by taking part in one of their initiatives (like the upcoming Halloween for Hunger). And if you’re interested in going to We Day this year, being a part of Global Issues Club can make your application process easier. The club meets in room 207 at lunch on Thursdays.

Volunteering aside, there are still many other interesting clubs. For example, there’s the Loudspeakers (also known as the public speaking club), which meets in room 225 after school on Tuesdays. Whether you find public speaking fun or terrifying, this is a good club to join - you can develop your public speaking skills in a more comfortable environment and, if you feel confident about your speaking skills, you can try out a competition.

For those more interested in science, there’s Ridge Physics. They meet in room 317 at lunch on Thursdays, and the purpose of the club is to discuss new breakthroughs, solve problems, and generally just talk about physics. Like the public speaking club, no prior experience is needed - as long as you’re interested in learning more about physics, you’re welcome to join.

Finally, there’s Ridge Report, which is definitely a lot a lot of fun (although I may be slightly biased about this one!). If you love writing or even have ideas for columns or other things you’d like to share with the school, Ridge Report is the place to go. Our meetings are Mondays at lunch in room 225.

Of course, these are only a few of the possible clubs to join. With so many options, there is almost certainly a club for everyone, whether it’s a sports team, a school council, or anything in between. It’s impossible to cover everything out there - but hopefully, this article has given you an idea of the amazing opportunities the Ridge has to offer.
