The Martian: Movie Review & Summary

When I first bought the ticket to see the Martian, I had very high hopes for the film. The movie sports a famous cast list including Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig. It earned 448.3 million at the box office and is still playing in theatres, making a name for itself in the top box office list of 2015.

It's also received many positive reviews as a film adaptation. According to a review on Rotten Tomatoes, critics found: "The result is an awe-inspiring adventure that explores vast ideas while staying grounded in very human emotional territory." Like many others, the critics judged and approved of the visual effects, the overall likability (due to Matt Damon's performance), and the scientific accuracy of the film.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

Just a few months ago, Marvel released Thor: The Dark World, and a few months before that, Iron Man 3. Both opened to critical and commercial success and kept Marvel Studios alive during Phase 2, but neither really brought out the glory days of Phase 1 with smash hits like Iron Man and the universally beloved Avengers. Now the third film in Phase 2 and ninth in the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe marks the halfway point of Phase 2, but does it revitalize the massive franchise or just prove once and for all that Marvel's magic has peaked at the end of Phase 1.

When Marvel was starting to disappoint viewers with its previous two movies. Both were fine and definitely worth a trip to the theater, but were underwhelming and flawed, hardly living up to the standards of the Avengers. The studio needed a movie to pull out to show that it wasn't a one time fluke and excitement was not high when that movie was Captain America's, probably the most boring character on the roster of Earth's mightiest heroes. But Marvel took the B-List hero and made a movie that not only helps the franchise, but stands as one of the greatest in the series.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is more a political conspiracy thriller than superhero film, taking a step back from the sci-fi of Thor 2 and bringing the story literally down to Earth. The story revolves around Captain America joining SHIELD but discovering the infiltration of old enemies within the organization he has allied himself with and has to deal with this in the form of his newest threat, the Winter Solider. The story is perhaps the most complex and mature of all Marvel movies, examining political corruption and the values of an average citizen, not just in America, but in the entire world. The plot is intelligent and the dialogue well written. It lacks any of the memorable action or fight scenes of a true superhero film , which is a downer for any movie goer hoping for a fun summer action thriller with spectacle to entertain. It's not anything mind blowing special effects-wise but instead tells a mature and well written story. The film shows Marvel is diverse in what it can do from the explosions of the Avengers to the terrorism of Iron Man 3 to the sci-fi action of Thor 2 to finally a political film like Captain America 2. 

Despite being dubbed as a Captain America film, it included more than one protagonist. Chris Evans returns as the titular character and really nails it in his acting. However, the problem remains that despite being in such a well-made film with a great actor playing him, the character of Captain America  just isn't interesting. He's bland and too perfect, being a natural leader who makes the right call all the time. Captain America's biggest flaw is having no flaws. Marvel also had a missed opportunity to make the character interesting. The concept of Steve Rogers being a man in a different time could have made a fascinating subplot for character growth, but was unused and wasted potential. Black Widow is another protagonist of the film, being an Avenger herself, allowing her to be more than a supporting character. What makes Black Widow interesting is her mysterious background and personality. It is also worth noting that she has appeared in just as many films as most other Avengers, but lacks her own series. Instead, she pops up as a guest star in various movies, all around the cinematic universe. It is probably because of her scattered appearances that she has a very mysterious background, one that could have been touched on in this movie. But the Winter Soldier fails in this regard like its predecessors, because it neglects to develop the Black Widow character. Maybe it's not fair to bash on this movie for it, since it is the job of the movies to focus on their titular character before a secondary one like Black Widow. However, as this film fails to even develop its own title character, it could have taken the responsibility of building a foundation for a Black Widow storyline that could continued to be explored in other films. Alas, Black Widow continues to get the shaft and in 3 movies, nothing has happened to her yet, which is a shame as she seems like a fun character who is acted splendidly. On top of two Avengers, this film introduces Sam Wilson aka the Falcon. Sam Wilson is perhaps the weakest character in the film. He has had no growth, no background, no story. He is just literally a person Captain America picked on the street to become his new best friend and later his sidekick. In costume, the Falcon has no inspiring - or frankly- even memorable moments. The Winter Soldier ass the villain is a great character, but not as a villain. He does have a story that is fascinating to see, though he has no menace or true evil. In fact, the real big bad of this movie is not a person, but an entire organization. This actually works as the strength of this movie is not its characters but its character relations. The relationships between character is excellent, from the playful banter between Captain America, the Black Widow, and the Falcon, to the heartfelt moments between Captain America and the Winter Soldier, making up for the mediocrity of the characters by themselves. 

Marvel needed to bring the spark in its Phase 2 and it found it in Captain America 2. The story was excellent, but lacked in spectacle and character growth, though the latter was redeemed by the strong character interactions. The film not only stands strong as a political thriller, but shows Marvel is diverse in what it can do from the explosions of the Avengers to the terrorism of Iron Man 3 to the sci-fi action of Thor 2 to finally a political film like Captain America 2. It makes the moviegoer appreciate the variety of choice in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing new appreciation for the franchise, making this the movie the one that Marvel needed to rejuvenate the series. 

Captain America 2 earns a 8/10 stars.

Frozen is a Warm Tale

Despite the chilly title, Frozen is a heart warming animated film set in a fictitious town of Arendelle. Loosely based on the Snow Queen, a fairy tale by Hans Anderson, the movie is set in the medieval times of a fairy tale and is premised exactly like a fairy tale, but more deep than a simple children story. The premise revolves around two sister princesses, Elsa and Anna. Elsa, the elder sister and the primary heir to the throne has elemental powers of ice, which are often dangerous and result in her being withdrawn and afraid of human company, for fear of harming someone. In contrast, her sister Anna is very bubbly and cheerful, hurt by her sister's cold withdrawal, thus striving for human company. The drama of the story is centered on the dangers of Elsa's powers  and the contrasting attitudes of the sisters. When the sisters get in an argument and Elsa loses control of her powers and flees leaving behind a frozen Arendelle, Anna must embark on a journey to find Elsa, bring her home, and undo the damage. But Anna also wants to bring her sister back and try to talk about the hidden secret that has come to light.

Frozen is a computer animated film, using the marvelous technology its sister company Pixar made, to fully use the graphics to their potential. The result is stunning visuals, with an amazing color splash and perfect capturing of the beauty of winter. The movie doesn't take advantage of its pretty front to cut down in the storytelling. The visuals are not a mask, but more of an enhancement of the script. The film uses the fairy tale format to reach to children while balancing drama, romance, light-hearted fun, and humor with masterful precision. Children and adults alike can sympathize with Elsa's noble solitude, crack a smile  at Anna's feisty personality, and laugh at Olaf the snowman and comic relief of the movie. The film is also a musical, featuring many songs that instantly ingrain themselves in childhood memories. With vivid visuals, strong storytelling, and musical numbers, Frozen is an instant classic.

Super Bowl 2014 Was More Than The Game

The Super Bowl of 2014 on Sunday, February 2 marked the showdown between the Seattle Sea hawks and the Denver Broncos. The action on the field drew gasps and stoked the excitement of the neutral sports fans' hearts as the sparks flew between the two teams. Meanwhile, fans rooting for a specific team had their groans and cheers, intensifying the passion in the game. However, as the match had plenty of viewers from the sports fans, that wasn't the only thing filling the several hours of football fun. Commercials of all sorts showed up for attention form the massive audience, while movie trailers of some of the most highly anticipated movies of the year also took the chance to interest the larger public.

While there was some fun in the event outside of the game, it must be remembered that the football competition was the meat and main attraction of the Super Bowl. No football game, no Super Bowl. The game itself was between the Seattle Sea hawks and the Denver Broncos. The match, however, didn't spike the excitement to the greatest possible height. The chair gripping tension in the game was thin on the ground as the competition was nothing. There were no stakes or questioning in the outcome of the game, as Seattle steamrollered Denver. The game quickly evolved to a large beating on the Broncos, as the Sea hawks didn't even let them have a single touchdown until the third quarter. Denver did manage to make some contribution to their tally, but not before Seattle ended the game off with a final score of 43-8. The game had some sports fun, but the stakes were weak for the neutral fans' enjoyment. Seattle fans definitely had ecstasy  for the Sea hawks' whopping victory (this was Seattle's first Super Bowl victory), but Denver fans had to suffer the unpleasant loss in their crushing defeat.

Not everybody is a sports fan though. Many don't care about the game, but the Super Bowl had more to offer, in the effort of getting more viewers. And many did tune in for the commercials. The commercials in the Super Bowl are famous. Some are comedic ads, which always brings entertainment value onto the table. There are also commercials which try to promote products catching a buyer's eye. There are also inspirational PSA's, which are always worth watching. Even if you're not a fan of sports, you could pass some time by turning on to the Super Bowl channel.

The Super Bowl is also ideal for movie studios. As there are already such a large number of viewers, thanks to the game and commercials, the event is a good place to show off footage to promote the movie. It also snags more views for the Super Bowl, as movie fans get to watch some teasers for the movies they anticipate. Studios benefit, the super bowl organizers benefit, it's a win-win. This year, some of the biggest names are of the superhero/ action genre. There was trailers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Amazing Spider-man 2, and Transformers: Age of Extinction, some of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Transformers was special in the sense as this was the first footage that was shown, making it quite exciting. Unfortunately, this was only 45 seconds, with not a lot shown. Captain America 2 was a different story. As Marvel had already released trailers for their current summer blockbuster, this was an extended preview that gave some new glimpses at the film. Transformers was short and Captain America was long. Amazing Spider-man 2, meanwhile, was somewhere in the middle. At the Super Bowl, a 30 second teaser was shown, but in the trailer, a URL was featured (EnemiesUnite.com). Fans could then eagerly turn to their computers, punch in the website, and view a 4-minute sizzle real. So while the Super Bowl led to the début of 4 and a half minutes of new footage, only 30 seconds were actually shown at the event. Either way, superhero fans had much to see in the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl may be a sporting event, but it had so much more to offer. While the views swelled with many ulterior uses of the match, audiences of many sort had something to look forward to on Sunday. Definitely something that was worth turning the television on for.

Pixar's Monsters University Has Been Schooled

It seems Pixar Animation Studios is falling out of the glory they held for the past decade. Famous for modern classics such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Up, Pixar has been upstaging its owner, Walt Disney Animation Studios, in the film making business. They created childhood memories for the modern audience with stunning new technology and original storytelling, but that may be no more.

When the Oscar Nominations for 2014 were announced, there were some surprising cuts from the list. One of the most shocking was the absence of Pixar's Monster's University in the category for Best Animated Feature Film. Pixar has usually been the winner of this category, holding 7 wins under their belt, which is no mean feat. Ever since Ratatouille, they have been holding a continuous streak of victories, reaching 4 successes in a row, hitting an all time high with one of the finest animated films in history, Toy Story 3. However, their biggest success was also the bang they went out with. Their streak was broken with their first critical failure, Cars 2, which didn't make it to the Oscar nominations. Never before had a Pixar film received negative reviews, and this failure left a mark. Since then, Pixar had lost its momentum and its magic. They released Brave the following year, and although it was a decent film and managed to scrape an Oscar, it disappointed fans hoping for a strong comeback. Their most recent film, Monster's University was well made and stronger than the previous 2 films, but it faced tougher competition than Brave did, and ultimately, was snubbed by the Oscars. Pixar seems to be falling as the companies they outshone for years suddenly rose up this year. 

While Pixar is facing a downward streak, the opposite is true for its owner, Walt Disney Animation Studios. Disney used to be the top of the animation world, but then entered the new millennium with weak entries. That is around the time Pixar flourished. Disney produced dud after dud, while Pixar rolled out instant classics. Now, as Pixar is finding itself declining, Disney is going back to its former glory. Ever since Tangled, Disney's films are the hits that Pixar's used to be. It is in fact their most recent film, Frozen, that has made the nominations, beating out its companion studio's movie. Pixar is paying for the many instances it outshone Disney, making the studios even. This sudden balance in them may be due to co-founder of Pixar, John Lasseter, lending his creative help to Disney, injecting his storytelling spark in both companies.

The Oscar nominations sure did surprise this year. It is not common for a Pixar film to be left out, but it has happened. However, Pixar shouldn't be put down so easily. They still have the potential to restore their name and as the Oscars haven't been viewed of having good taste for the past few years, Pixar can still be rest assured the audience doesn't agree with the Oscar's snub. But for this year at least, Pixar will have to sit back and  root for a Disney victory.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Sinks in Failure

Despite critical failure for their first film, 20th Century Fox has produced a sequel for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Also despite critical failure of the first movie, fans were more than willing to give this movie a chance, even getting genuinely excited. Did Sea of Monsters live up to the hype and succeed where its predecessor failed, or is it just a sign for Fox to give up this pointless franchise.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters continues of  the story of teenage demigod Percy Jackson. In his new adventure, Percy finds that his enemy, Luke, had poisoned the magical tree which creates a magical boundary protecting the demigod training camp, Camp Half-Blood. To save his now defenseless home, Percy and his friends must voyage through Sea of Monsters (known to mortals as the Bermuda Triangle) to retrieve the Golden Fleece, the only thing that can heal the tree.

As the title indicates, there is a lot of monsters in this movie. These lead to a lot of action scenes, as the protagonists struggle to overcome all obstacles in a location filled with foes. While Sea of Monsters is pretty action packed, it doesn't lead a lot of story. There is the main plot and a small storyline about family issues, but other than that, not much is offered. The characters are 1-dimensional and the film fails to leave a good, or even large impression, just joining the ranks of forgettable movies. Maybe to mask the weakness of the story, the movie uses a lot of CGI to make a pretty film. However, the excess is its downfall and every monster looks as if it were created from a computer, rather than creating a convincing spectacle.

While Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is a weak film, it does have similar amount of quality as the first film (that's not a lot), but very different styles. That can be understood, as each picture has a different director. The two movies feel very different in terms of tone ad darkness. The first film is a little darker and slightly more emotional, while the second is bright, colorful, and just a simple adventure movie. The characters themselves also experience changes. Take the demigod Annabeth Chase for example. In the first film, she was a fierce, powerful, and experienced warrior, who rarely loses. In the sequel, she has been toned down to a warmer, gentler, weaker character, who seems to be taken down multiple times against opponents. Also changed are small things, like the title, from the mouthful of Percy Jackson and the Olympians to the simple Percy Jackson. The drastic changes are however for the better. Sea of Monsters is closer to the book, funnier, and tried to keep the franchise alive, though used a lot of influence from the Harry Potter series to do this, which lead to further critical failure.

All in all, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is a time passer, and will keep you entertained, but is weak in storytelling, characters, and making itself a big film. It is an improvement over Lightning Thief for the fans, but still not doing the justice the books deserve. The movie strives to make itself the next Harry Potter and fails in doing so and because of it. Perhaps Fox should consider dropping the series, and leave the remaining books unadapted. Or they could keep the franchise alive with a reboot. No matter what, this film failed to save the (current) series and left an unnoticeable mark upon movie history.

More Amazing Spider-man 2 on the Web: The International Trailer Review

It seemed that there was hardly any footage from the upcoming Amazing Spider-man 2, but now there is no shortage of it. Just a week ago, Sony Pictures released the first trailer for their movie, which we reviewed here at Word on the Street. Now, an international trailer has hit the web (no pun intended), which is subtitled in German, and features more glimpses from the film, which we are here again to review. 

While the American trailer focused on the action scenes of Spiderman and displayed bright colored fight scenes, massive explosions, and shots of not one or two, but three villains, the new one focuses on the life of Peter Parker. A major difference is the humor. We get some genuine chuckles watching Peter Parker's witty remarks and attempts to conceal his identity. Andrew Garfield seems ready to take on the lighter side of his character with energy and enthusiasm, though takes the somber lines seriously, fitting the mood of Spiderman perfectly. The supporting cast is also seems strong, showing acting that feels genuine in the little screen time we see. We don't see anything new from the villains however and little is unfamiliar in the action scenes, but since we have enough of explosive battles shown in movies, it is refreshing to have the humorous and light side of the film take center stage.

All in all, the international trailer gives the same basic sum of the movie, though reveals a cheery side that is a pleasant surprise. Excitement is boosting and it seems many have a new summer flick to add to their calendar.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 will be released on May 2, 2014, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field, Dane Dehann, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, and Chris Cooper.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 Trailer Amazes: Trailer Review

Spiderman is making his return (for the fifth time) in the Amazing Spiderman 2, the sequel to 2012’s reboot. After much hype and leaked footage appearing online, which desperate fans used as a glimpse, Sony has released the first official trailer for their sequel, which swings through 2 minutes of action, teases, and excitement. 

 

            The Amazing Spiderman, while being a solid reboot and enjoyable film, was not a masterpiece. Luckily, it seems that the director Marc Webb (ironic name for a Spiderman director) has been taking notes from the fan reaction. A major complaint was the grittiness and darkness of the first movie (an obvious attempt to capitalize on the success of the Batman movies) which many felt was not a fitting trait for Spiderman. There is an immediate change here, as the trailer shows a more colorful and very bright display, though it may be too bright due to heavy CGI usage, which is slightly worrisome, Webb deserves credit for improving that factor. Also lighting things up is the new antagonist Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, who provides lightning effects that spark an interest in him, not just by his power, but his story and sympathetic side. 

 

And while looking at villains, also opposing Spiderman is Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti, and the Green Goblin, played by Dane Dehaan. Rhino is originally a thug who gains a rhino armor, giving him super strength, while the movie is taking a version where his suit is purely robotic. 

 

However, the real interest is in the Green Goblin, who was already seen in the 2002 Spiderman movie. Traditionally, Norman Osborn is the Goblin, but this version uses Harry Osborn, his son, who has taken up the mantle at one point himself. Even though Norman is the true Goblin, Harry isn't too far of a departure. His design, however, is different. Over here, Harry is wearing black armor, green face makeup, and spiky, green hair. The jury is still out on how he will impress at the movies. 

 

 The trailer offers an equal amount of glimpse at all three villains in the trailer, though it is worrisome to think how effectively the villains will be balanced in the movie. As many people know, too many villains is rarely a good thing. The trailer also shows a personal side of Peter's life, featuring his love interest, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), whose fate is ominous. Also shown is Peter's Aunt May, who is being given some secrets of her own, and the further mystery of Peter's parents, while showing some footage from what seems to be an answer to the untold story. Peter's life seems to be as interesting here as his life as Spiderman. Andrew Garfield seems to handle both aspects of Spidey's life well and stays true to the character.

Mixing electrifying action, bright color, glimpses at what seems to be solid villains, and an intriguing story, the trailer grasps popularity and the footage gains thrills from the general audiences. Also included are winks to comic fans, which is a sure way to gain approval. The Amazing Spiderman 2 seems to be what Spiderman fans have been looking for, as well as more than a solid film for the audience at large, if the trailer is the standard for the movie.
