The NBA’s crazy offseason

This NBA off-season was arguably one of the most dramatic and eventful in NBA history! During this offseason, many big names such as Paul George + Carmelo Anthony (Oklahoma City), Chris Paul (Houston Rockets), Dwyane Wade + Derrick Rose (Cleveland Cavaliers), Paul Millsap (Denver Nuggets), Gordon Hayward (Boston Celtics), and Jimmy Butler (Minnesota Timberwolves) made big moves- including, of course the biggest news of the offseason: Kyrie going to the Celtics, and Isiah Thomas to the Cavs. Kyrie, George, Melo, Wade, and Paul are the biggest names to have a change of scenery during this offseason. With the big switch for each of these players, the question is always; ‘will they be a good fit?’. Paul joined the Rockets and averaged around 28 mpg, 10 ppg, and (as he usually does) he had 7 apg. He seemed to be comfortable in his new home, but he has definitely had took a hit in his scoring numbers and minutes. George, however, averaged 29.3 mpg in OKC, but unlike CP3, his scoring was still impressive at almost 20 ppg. Melo was playing ‘hoodie-Melo’-esque this preseason. He looked like he was in his early NYK days. He only averaged 19.7 mpg, but had a great efficiency level by scoring 15 ppg, and on 45% shooting while grabbing 6.3 boards a game. Wade, a certain Hall of Famer, settled into his new home in Cleveland with his title-winning buddy, LeBron. The legendary shooting guard averaged only 19 mpg, but put up 11.5 ppg. It’s a lower minute and point total than his career averages (35.4 mpg and 23.3 ppg) but with LeBron, his scoring is not needed to be in the 20s. Last, but certainly not least, Kyrie, in his new home in the TD Garden in Boston, looked like the star of the show playing 24.3 mpg and 17 ppg while putting up some of his signature circus shots. These all-stars and masters of their craft are dubbed so for a reason: they are proving to the world that no matter where they go, they can still ball at an elite level.

Super Bowl 2014 Was More Than The Game

The Super Bowl of 2014 on Sunday, February 2 marked the showdown between the Seattle Sea hawks and the Denver Broncos. The action on the field drew gasps and stoked the excitement of the neutral sports fans' hearts as the sparks flew between the two teams. Meanwhile, fans rooting for a specific team had their groans and cheers, intensifying the passion in the game. However, as the match had plenty of viewers from the sports fans, that wasn't the only thing filling the several hours of football fun. Commercials of all sorts showed up for attention form the massive audience, while movie trailers of some of the most highly anticipated movies of the year also took the chance to interest the larger public.

While there was some fun in the event outside of the game, it must be remembered that the football competition was the meat and main attraction of the Super Bowl. No football game, no Super Bowl. The game itself was between the Seattle Sea hawks and the Denver Broncos. The match, however, didn't spike the excitement to the greatest possible height. The chair gripping tension in the game was thin on the ground as the competition was nothing. There were no stakes or questioning in the outcome of the game, as Seattle steamrollered Denver. The game quickly evolved to a large beating on the Broncos, as the Sea hawks didn't even let them have a single touchdown until the third quarter. Denver did manage to make some contribution to their tally, but not before Seattle ended the game off with a final score of 43-8. The game had some sports fun, but the stakes were weak for the neutral fans' enjoyment. Seattle fans definitely had ecstasy  for the Sea hawks' whopping victory (this was Seattle's first Super Bowl victory), but Denver fans had to suffer the unpleasant loss in their crushing defeat.

Not everybody is a sports fan though. Many don't care about the game, but the Super Bowl had more to offer, in the effort of getting more viewers. And many did tune in for the commercials. The commercials in the Super Bowl are famous. Some are comedic ads, which always brings entertainment value onto the table. There are also commercials which try to promote products catching a buyer's eye. There are also inspirational PSA's, which are always worth watching. Even if you're not a fan of sports, you could pass some time by turning on to the Super Bowl channel.

The Super Bowl is also ideal for movie studios. As there are already such a large number of viewers, thanks to the game and commercials, the event is a good place to show off footage to promote the movie. It also snags more views for the Super Bowl, as movie fans get to watch some teasers for the movies they anticipate. Studios benefit, the super bowl organizers benefit, it's a win-win. This year, some of the biggest names are of the superhero/ action genre. There was trailers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Amazing Spider-man 2, and Transformers: Age of Extinction, some of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Transformers was special in the sense as this was the first footage that was shown, making it quite exciting. Unfortunately, this was only 45 seconds, with not a lot shown. Captain America 2 was a different story. As Marvel had already released trailers for their current summer blockbuster, this was an extended preview that gave some new glimpses at the film. Transformers was short and Captain America was long. Amazing Spider-man 2, meanwhile, was somewhere in the middle. At the Super Bowl, a 30 second teaser was shown, but in the trailer, a URL was featured (EnemiesUnite.com). Fans could then eagerly turn to their computers, punch in the website, and view a 4-minute sizzle real. So while the Super Bowl led to the début of 4 and a half minutes of new footage, only 30 seconds were actually shown at the event. Either way, superhero fans had much to see in the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl may be a sporting event, but it had so much more to offer. While the views swelled with many ulterior uses of the match, audiences of many sort had something to look forward to on Sunday. Definitely something that was worth turning the television on for.

How to... get fit! (By: Cheryl Joseph)

Summer is coming in less than three months, and if you’re like the rest of us, you’ve developed what some like to call a little “pouch”. By “pouch”, I mean that your trouble zones (stomach, thighs, etc.) get an extra layer of insulation. Some like to blame it on our evolutionary desire to put on fat for winter. For any other animal, it would be a good thing, but we humans are masochistic and have decided that it’s better to be thin.
If you want to get fit, fad diets don’t work – you may lose weight at first, but you’ll gain it back later on. The best way to do it is in a holistic way: by eating right and exercising, so that you’ll keep off any weight that you lost. Really, you need to change your lifestyle before you can truly get healthy. Here are a few ways to get fit, and stay fit.
1) Eat food from all the food groups. Unless your personal beliefs prevent you from doing so, do your best to eat meat, dairy, grains, and fruits and vegetables. Approximately half of each meal should consist of fruits and vegetables. We all know that fruits and vegetables are great, but protein is useful too! Protein actually keeps you full for longer, so you’ll eat less. Meat is also full of vitamins and minerals essential to all bodily processes, including weight loss and metabolism. Carbs are vital too: when they’re whole grain, their fiber helps keep you full as well (among other health benefits). As for dairy, not only does it contain vast amounts of vitamins and minerals, but studies have shown that women that drink milk actually lose weight faster than those who don’t. It’s just a study, but there’s no harm in trying.
2) Drink lots of water. Studies have actually shown that more often than not, when you think you’re hungry, it’s actually thirst. This is especially common in women. Besides preventing overeating, water cleanses your body, which is great for clearing up your skin (who doesn’t hate pimples?).
3) Start an exercise regimen. The ideal is to exercise for 3 to 5 sessions a week – but make sure you understand which type of exercise does what. For instance, a lot of people do crunches to get rid of stomach fat; crunches (when done properly) are great, but mostly it’ll just reinforce the muscle beneath your layer of fat, rather than getting rid of the layer itself. This is why the best exercise regimens contain a combination of cardio, strength training, and flexibility. Cardiovascular exercise, as the name suggests, increases your heart rate; it works your whole body, burning calories, strengthening your heart, and increasing your lung capacity. Cardio exercise is (arguably) one of the best ways to burn calories. Strength training specifically targets muscles – weight-lifting, Pilates, etc. This is great, because not only does it burn calories during your workout, but also increases your metabolism. This means that you’ll burn more calories at rest, without even lifting a finger. Stretching is also essential to longer muscles, and should be done before and after cardio and strength training, after warming up the muscles. A combination of all three of these is your best bet to getting fit.
4) Exercise… again. Physicians also recommend incorporating at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day – “moderate” meaning something that warms you up, and makes you a little out of breath. It’s pretty easy to integrate this into your day: walking to school, work, or other locations; cleaning the house; and gardening are all great sources of moderate exercise.
5) Motivate yourself. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, the best way to get motivated to exercise and eat well is to understand all the benefits associated with it. Exercise, for instance, stimulates insane amounts of endorphins, which is why everyone is super happy right after a workout. It also helps you concentrate. In the long run, it benefits your body in countless ways (other than how it looks!): your organs begin to work optimally, your skin glows, your hair is much shinier and healthier, and you have an overall feeling of well-being. Who doesn’t want that?
Although it’s great to get in shape, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. Also, remember that everyone has a different natural body shape. So don’t be upset if you don’t look exactly like some other girl – every body shape is beautiful. By all means, get fit – I encourage it! But as long as you’re living a healthy lifestyle, even if you don’t look like what you see on television, it doesn’t matter. Hopefully, you’ll see soon enough how gorgeous a healthy body really is.
