Interview with Student Council of 2015-2016

Student Council is back! After last year, it looked like we may not have had a Student Council this year, and everybody was worried about the fate of all the amazing events Student Council has this year. Luckily, Student Council has made its return and all the events are good to go! In light of this good news, we visited the new StudCo last Thursday so that all of us can get to know them better.

Let's start by introducing everybody. What are all your names and your positions on Student Council this year?

Angelica Rivas and Kevin Zhou - Co-Pm's
Erin Lyne - Minister of Finance
Olivia Haynes and Eve Stasz - Ministers of Promotions
Thomas Desmarais and Shannon Copeland - Deputy Ministers
Karman Mangat and Rachel Eatough- Grade 9 Reps
Kassandra Scretas and Max Perry - Grade 10 Reps
Melissa Li - Interclub Minister
David Kang - Minister of Records

So what are some of your goals and initiatives this year on Student Council?

This year on Student Council, we want to be able to meet the expectations of the students body and bring them everything they want to see. This includes going through all the normal events Student Council holds every year, but also add in new elements to our initiatives. A major goal for us is to be more collaborative with other clubs at the school, by doing events with them and coming to events that we don't run to show our support. We also really want to make Iroquois all inclusive by having a variety in our events, from dances to board game nights, so that there is something for everyone. Overall, we're aiming to keep the school spirit up the entire year and by making sure that students can be involved

What changes or impact do you want to leave on the school this year with student council?

We really want the various events we hold this year to be really spirit orientated and ultimately make every student proud to be at the Ridge. We're also trying to have complete transparency this year in finance and decision making. Nothing we do will be hidden or kept from the student body. When students attend our events, they'll know that they're money is going to a good cause, such as our sister school in Kenya. All our decisions will be made with the General Council, so that we'll have maximum input from the student body. We know we say this every year, but we really do want to make this year's Student Council the best it's ever been.

Right now there's a lot of controversy about the fact that there were no elections. How do you respond to that?

We really couldn't help it. Last year, Student Council was shut down and we really didn't know whether it would continue on this year. Fortunately, we were able to make it happen, but because of it starting up so late, we couldn't go through the lengthy election process if we wanted to have a Student Council this year. It's not like we just took control this year or were handed the positions. There was an application process and all executives were chosen by faculty, so the students did have to earn their position on the StudCo. Ultimately, it's better than the alternative of having no Student Council at all, which would mean not having all these amazing school events. We just have to move forward, because this is ultimately just a bump in the road. We believe in the election process and hopefully, we can bring that back for future years. Even this year, we want to have open communication with the student body and make sure their voice is heard. They can still provide input and feedback through General Council, which meets Mondays at lunch and Wednesdays after school.

Any final words you want to say to the students?

Get ready for an amazing year! We hope to do a lot of great things this year and we already have two events this month. Make sure to come out to Fall Fest on Thursday, October 15th and the Halloween Dance on Thursday October 29th.
