Pink Returns to the Ridge

As October begins, so does the Pink Campaign, the Ridge’s yearly immersion in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual explosion of pink is eagerly awaited by everyone at IRHS. The school store has begun to sell their pink merchandise, pink lights frame the school entrance, and the trees in the street are decorated with pink ribbons.

On October 1st, the school store filled their shelves with pink sweaters, shirts, and bracelets, and opened their doors to the student body. Ridge TV has a new pink backdrop, and students and staff can already be seen wearing this year’s pink attire. All of this is an exciting reminder that the reign of Pink has begun.
This Ridge tradition is more than just a good time - it’s an important way to spread awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. This initiative is important to all of us at the Ridge, in particular the students leading it all, the Pink Committee.

I stopped by the school store and spoke to some of the members of the Pink Committee, Ruby, Julia, Shannon and Cassie. When I asked why they joined the pink committee, Cassie shared that she wanted to be part of something that is making such a big impact on our school community. I asked them what the best part about being involved in the Pink Campaign was, and Shannon told me that the day of the Pink Game, seeing all their hard work come together, is the most rewarding. Ruby followed by stating that planning the events that make everyone get pumped up, excited, and involved is the best.

Even though the month has just begun, we can look forward to the Pink Football Game this Thursday. However, Ridge football is not the only team that will be sporting pink - the ice hockey, field hockey, basketball, and volleyball teams will all have pink games this month.

October is an exciting month, but more importantly, it is a time when the Ridge gets a chance to do our part to bring about change. You can get involved by donating money into your homeroom’s donations envelope, purchasing merchandise from the pink store, attending the games and events held by the pink committee, and taking part in the ‘on wednesday we wear pink’ spirit days. Let’s make this October a great one!
