The Near End of School Crisis

We have all heard of the mid life crisis, the quarter life crisis, even the existential crisis. However, as we are all approaching the end of our set paths of childhood, it’s time to choose the next course of action for ourselves, and it is terrifying.
For our whole lives there has always been a set path, but now we are forced to start thinking about our futures. “Choose your electives according to what you want to go into in University. Choose your University major based on what you to do when you grow up. Choose what you want to be when you grow up!”

As children when choosing an occupation, the sky’s the limit. You can be a princess, a knight, the mayor, a superhero, or even an animal (personally I wanted to be a pig). Unfortunately now, we have to be realistic. What is obtainable? Can you comfortably live off of this job? Do you even like it?

A whirlwind of questions and factors are circling around in our minds as University fairs are coming around, and are parents are starting to ask about plans for the future. It can feel as if the whole world is moving at the speed of light, and we are stumbling along in attempt to keep up.

Many students vaguely choose their electives, apply for a University, and get out of University with a degree and still no idea what to do (aka the quarter life crisis). Nevertheless, do not fret. This can possibly be prevented. Here are some of my suggestions on how to navigate this intimidating time in our lives. Just be aware that this is just my personal theory, with no supporting evidence or proof. Just logic.

Decision making is inevitable, and time is limited. What I am about to recommend may be an unpopular opinion, and it might feel like you are opening a box of accumulated terror, but it will be worth it (maybe). Suggestion: Take some time, and seriously think about what you want to do, something that you will be content with. I understand that it is harder said than done, so here are few questions that may help give you even the slightest insight to your future.
  • What kind of environment would you prefer working in?
  • Are you creative?
  • What are you good at?
  • What are you interested in?
  • What kind of lifestyle do you want to live?

On the contrary, don’t stress too much. There is still a long road ahead, and plenty of time to figure things out. My advice is to at least strive towards a vague direction that you are passionate about, and figure out everything else as it comes along. Who needs a fortune teller when you can have ambition.
