November 7th - Outfits of the Week - Fifty Shades Of Grey

This is not what you think it is - we just really love the colour grey, and fashion icons at the ridge seem to too! As Mia and I circulated the Ridge, we noticed that grey is an extremely popular colour amongst most Trailblazers. Grey is one of those colours that people associate with a feeling; sad. As amazing as you all look in these different shades of grey we’re hoping it isn't a cry for help and everybody is feeling bangarang. If not, we hope we can bring some light into your life with this super positive issue of Outfits Of The Week.

U.S. Election

So the US election is finally happening tomorrow. We’ve been hearing about it all year, and we’re all probably kind of tired of it. This election cycle has been a nasty one, and it’ll be nice to have it finally end. But it’s not over yet, and there are still a few things that we all need to deal with.

Photo from NBC Bay Area News, ‘Creepy’ Clown Scares.

It is believed that the surge of clowns wielding weapons originated in the United States of America has now entered Canada. The “creepy” clown sightings that everybody on social media has seen, has spread across more than 20 states of U.S.A, and recently into Canada, leading to arrests, school warnings, and police investigation.

Hi everybody and happy Halloween! Today, instead of Mercedes, it’s Mia (the one who takes all the awesome pictures) updating you on the best outfits. I know, bummer (but let me just say, I’m twice as cool as Mercedes. JUST KIDDING MECHE). She’s very territorial over this column, so this is a special moment for me. For this special edition of OOTW, I’ll be sharing one super cool costume worn by a Trailblazer today in honour of Halloween. So let’s get rolling!

Thanksgiving DIY - Turkey Napkin Holders

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for what we have, reunite with family and friends, share what’s in the goodness of our hearts, but most importantly… EAT TURKEY! In this spirit, I've put together a quick DIY project that you can actually do with the artistic skills you have, and the materials you actually have at home.

These fun turkey napkin and cutlery holders are good projects for young children, or the young at heart, I promise you’re not too cool for arts and crafts. I tried some myself for the article photos.

Terry Fox Run/Walk

IMG_0818.JPGMore than 100 types. Number two killer in developed countries. About nine Canadians die from it per hour. Almost half of us Canadians will develop it. A predicted quarter of us will die from it. However, about 60 percent of the people who get it are completely cured, and it is thirty percent preventable. What? Cancer. Where? Everywhere. How do we cure it? Support events like the Terry Fox run, which in turn supports research.

OOTW - October 3 - Pink Week

The month of October has begun. Here at the Ridge, October doesn't only mean turkey and cool costumes. If you didn’t already know, Iroquois is a huge supporter of Breast Cancer awareness month. All the students and staff come together on October 6th to watch football and wear pink. Our annual Pink game is my all time fave Ridge event that isn’t a dance. Not only does Pink day have a great sense of community but it has a great sense of style too. Here are five outfits that I thought kicked just as much butt as the junior football team.

SHAD McMaster 2016

I've heard SHAD described in many ways. "Month-long program that teaches science and business". "Summer camp for bright students across Canada". "A taste of university life". While those basic definitions have a certain degree of accuracy, each one misses the core of what the program really is. SHAD is all of those definitions combined, and so much more.

US Supreme Court: United States V Texas

WASHINGTON D.C.- On April 18, 2016, the line to view the day’s US Supreme Court case stretches around the block. In fact, the line has been pushed back to make room for the crowds of reporters, television crews, and protesters clustering below the steps. Some are setting up, some are starting to record, and some are walking around the area, interviewing case-watching hopefuls and protesters, who are holding up signs and chanting in both English and Spanish. The most common words are “Sí, se puede”- ‘Yes, we can!’.

A Night In Hollywood - IRHS Semi Formal

In only two days IRHS StudCo will be hosting this year’s semi-formal, A Night In Hollywood. To get some more details we talked to members of StudCo and asked all about the night. The old Hollywood vibe is an interesting choice and we wondered why StudCo chose it. Angelica explained, “Hollywood is a versatile theme, that really allowed us to do anything. The possibilities are endless in terms of ideas for decorations which we think truly is the essence of Semi-Formal. The inspiration came from the love for movies which so many of us have, we thought we could really bring to life the experience of attending an award show or gala”. The very

Dear Dani

Dear Dani,

Do I have to go to Ridge 360?

Hi!

Ridge 360 is our school’s conference this year. People have been planning this conference since September and there is a huge group of people involved. Not only are there passionate students running workshops, there are also some amazing speakers that you for sure don’t want to miss! Professional speakers are coming in for this, that’s right, people who speak for a living have generously taken time out of their busy schedules to come. Many people, resources, a lot of time and effort has been put on this, so it may never happen again, thus, don’t think just because you’re not in grade 12 you’ll get another chance. There are even people from other schools coming just to take advantage of this great opportunity. If that isn’t incentive enough to come on your own accord, yes it is mandatory. Ridge 360 should be treated as a normal school day, attendance will be taken. As well, there will be a marked reflection to be completed at the end of the day that will go in to your last period’s final mark. However, despite this, I highly recommend going just for the amazing experience and the knowledge you will take from it, as well to support your hard working peers.

Sincerely,
Dani

Gravity Falls Weirdmaggedon III: Take Back the Falls Review (Spoilers, duh)

After 40 episodes, mystery after mystery, fantastic characters, beautifully dramatic moments, and joke after joke, Gravity Falls ended last week to a viewership of 10.7 million people. The finale titled "Take Back the Falls" is a great blend of comedy, character development, and action (One of the best robot fights ever). The finale pitted two seasons worth of characters against the apocalyptic forces of Bill Cipher, it culminated in a battle between a heavily modified Mystery Shack and an omnipotent Cipher, the final repairing of the relationship between Stan and Ford, and a heart-warming ending that wraps up the whole story in a neat little bow.
