Tasty Treats #1: Snow Season Snacks

By Tanvi Manku

“Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!” The New Year is here, and this is the first-ever issue of “Tasty Treats”. In this issue, our theme is winter! Winter is quickly arriving, and there is so much to do! You could:
  • Participate in a winter sport, such as skiing, snowboarding, or skating.
  • Play outside in the snow (ex. Build a snowman, have a snowball fight, go sledding).
  • Relax inside, watching television or reading a book.
These are just some examples. After having so much fun, you need to re-energize, so this week on Tasty Treats, we’ve created a delicious and easy-to-make recipe that makes a great snack and gift. Enjoy!

Tasty Treats: Candy Cane Bark
A candy cane is one of the most festive winter foods one can think of. With only 3 main ingredients, plus whatever extra toppings you would like, you have a simple and scrumptious dessert!

Directions:
  1. Crush the candy cane into tiny pieces. If necessary, place them in a resealable bag and use a rolling pin.
  2. Next, break or chop using a knife, the chocolate into tiny pieces. The tinier the pieces are, the quicker they will melt. Place the chocolate with the butter (if using) in a microwave-safe bowl and place it in the microwave for 30-second intervals, checking and stirring the chocolate between each.
  3. Line a tray with tin foil or parchment paper and pour the melted chocolate in. Spread it out evenly using a spoon.
  4. Sprinkle on the crushed candy cane and place the bark in the fridge or freezer until the chocolate hardens.
  5. When it is done, break the chocolate into chunks, and your candy cane bark is complete. It's snow yummy!
Customize:
  • Substitute the chocolate base for chocolate spread or yogurt. If you use chocolate spread, only microwave it for about 30-seconds. If you use yogurt, there is no need to heat it up.
  • Adding butter to chocolate before melting adds shine, but the same effect will occur by using a substitute such as coconut oil.
  • Try using different types of bases together. You can layer, swirl, or create patterns with them.
  • Use different toppings, such as fruits and nuts.
  • Pour the chocolate into ice-cube molds or cookie cutters for a variety of shapes.
