Ridge Drama Production - After Hours

The theatre is dark. Little by little, people trickle in, chatting as they find their seats. Though it’s dim, I can see the stage is set to look like a clothing store, but there is no sign of the actors. I check my watch. Still five minutes before the show is supposed to start.

This was the beginning of an amazing performance by Ridge Drama. In case you missed it, the plot revolved around two clothing store mannequins - Patricia and Lou-Anne -  that come to life at night, when the store closes. They accidentally free another mannequin, named Danny, from a shipping crate. The three mannequins don’t exactly get along, and all sorts of hilarious antics ensue. Things get even crazier when two burglars break into the store. The mannequins must settle their disagreements and stop the burglars, all while avoiding being caught moving around.

It was impossible not to at least chuckle during the performance. All the actors did a fantastic job developing their characters while also keeping the audience laughing throughout. In addition to the major roles, there were many minor roles that added even more humour to the play. However, there was still a clear plot and the funny aspect didn’t take anything away from it.

It’s clear the actors enjoyed themselves greatly as the put the play together. Austin Micallef, who played Danny, says that being mannequins was an unusual and interesting experience, as “It really plays with your emotions”. Both he and Mercedes Clunie (Lou-Anne) would recommend that other students join. In Mercedes’ words, “Even auditions are fun”.

As the curtain closes, I’m left with a huge smile on my face. Ridge Drama performed an outstanding show, and I know I am already looking forward to their next performance.
