The new drama series, Riverdale which casts itself as a moody teen drama in a small, mysterious and slightly spooky town was released on January the 26th, and has become one of the top ranked shows watched on Netflix in less than a week.
Riverdale’s story is set with characters from the old, frozen in time, Archie Comics which dates back to 1941. The main lead, KJ Apa (Archie) is quite different and mostly better liked than the comic Archie, who was consistently round faced, oval eyed and jolly, and was torn between sweet, undenying Betty and fierce, rich Veronica. The roles of Betty and Veronica have been slightly modified, but their overall behavior remain the same. The actress playing Betty, Lili Reinhart incorporates the comic version’s personality perfectly, being sweet- as-a-pea, innocent and in love with Archie. However Veronica’s role was changed. The actress for Veronica, Camila Mendes, in my opinion, is perfect for the role; bold, sarcastic, and confident. The pleasant (or deceiving) twist in the story is Veronica trying to change and modify herself into a better, kinder person, after the arrest of her millionaire father, resulting in her (and her mother) moving to the remote town of Riverdale. With Riverdale’s very attractive leads, countless secret backstories, and twisted, buried relationships, the directors have created a stylized version of the Archie comics.
There are currently three chapters (episodes) in season 1. The plot revolves around a murder mystery. The first episode starts off, showing the murder of a popular jock, Jason from the Riverdale high school. Jason’s sister was with him on the day of the murder and appears to be stricken and heartbroken. She was a cheerleader at the high school. The first chapter was mostly an introduction to the story. The second chapter was mainly where the plot thickened with drama, mystery, tension and many unexpected shocks. It ends with Archie almost confessing that he was there on the night of the murder and Jason’s sister lying about the details of his death. This leaves viewers in suspense and wanting more. There is a new episode released every week.
In my opinion, it is definitely a must-watch show. The first three episodes indicate that a lot more mystery, adventure and drama will follow. It is not a flat Betty-Veronica-Archie love triangle, which I expected it to be, but instead an excellent drama with countless, interesting turns on unexpected times, extremely capturing mysteries and backstories which make the viewer wait enthusiastically for a new chapter every week. Altogether, I would give it a rating of 4/ 5.
