Amazing Spider-man #2 review

STK639259After the relaunch of the Amazing Spider-man, Peter Parker has had his world flipped upside down and the second issue continues the tale of the wall crawler dealing with the damage Otto Octavius has done to his personal life.

After the introductory first issue, major events happen in the second issue, making the pace rapid and ongoing. To antagonize Spider-man this issue is Electro, who has a beef with Spider-man after the Superior Spider-man enslaved him for his "Superior Six". The battle between Spider-man and Electro is dynamic and flashy as usual, with the artist, Humberto Ramos, using his strength in illustrating battle scenes to make it explosive and visually appealing. However, the fight is brief and unresolved, and makes the real highlight of this issue the character interactions.
Peter has to deal with many members of his supporting cast on how Otto affected them all, including the Avengers, the Human Torch, and easily the strongest of them all, the conversation with Anna Marcioli, the woman who fell in love with Otto Octavius in Peter Parker's body. To see her deal with the fact that the real Peter Parker doesn't love her, that her boyfriend was a former super villain, and that he is now gone makes for am excellent dialogue written by Dan Slott.

When Peter is in costume, he has to deal with the Avengers, who has been frequently apprehending him in the Superior era. After a quick resolution, Spider-man now is back in the good books with his fellow heroes and Slott brings in an interesting concept of the heroes comparing notes on how it is to return from death.

Overall, this is another solid instalment in the post-Superior era of Spider-man comics, where loose threads are dealt with, interesting developments introduced, and well written character moments are included. The action with Electro is forced and brief, utilized as a movie tie-in, and never serving weight. The only real excitement was when Spider-man punched Captain America, which is fun to see after Captain America 2 has been beating Amazing Spider-an 2 critically and commercially. This issue is 7.5 out of ten stars.
